Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) Botox
Botulinum toxin can be used to reduce excessive, troublesome sweating (hyperhidrosis), most commonly in the underarms and in selected cases the palms or soles. By temporarily blocking the nerve signals that activate sweat glands, it often produces a marked reduction in sweating for several months. Suitability and treatment areas are decided in person after assessment.
What It Addresses
- Excessive underarm, palm, or sole sweating
- Sweating not controlled by antiperspirants
- Areas and dosing planned after in-person assessment
What it is and how it works
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating beyond what the body needs for temperature control, and it can affect daily comfort, clothing, and confidence. Botulinum toxin is injected into small areas of the skin where sweating is most active, where it temporarily blocks the nerve signals that tell sweat glands to produce sweat.
Because the effect is local and temporary, sweating in the treated area is usually reduced for several months before nerve signalling gradually returns and maintenance treatment may be considered.
- Targets focal, troublesome sweating
- Temporarily blocks nerve-to-gland signals
- Effect is local to the treated area
What it treats and who it suits
This approach is most often used for underarm sweating, and in selected patients for sweaty palms or soles, particularly when antiperspirants and topical measures have not given enough relief. Whether it is appropriate depends on the diagnosis, the pattern and triggers of sweating, your medical history, and your goals.
An examination helps rule out other causes of excessive sweating and confirm that focal treatment is suitable for you. Not every type of sweating responds in the same way, so a plan is made individually.
- Most commonly used for underarms
- Palms or soles in selected patients
- Considered when antiperspirants are not enough
How treatment is planned and what to expect
After assessment, the treatment area, number of injection points, and dosing are planned according to the location and severity of sweating. The procedure itself is usually quick, and many patients return to normal activities the same day; mild tenderness or small marks at injection sites may occur briefly.
A reduction in sweating often becomes noticeable within several days to about two weeks. Results are temporary and typically last for several months, after which repeat sessions may be planned to maintain comfort. Results vary between patients.
- Quick treatment, usually same-day return to activity
- Effect often noticeable within days to two weeks
- Repeat sessions planned for maintenance
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the effect last?
In many patients the reduction in sweating lasts several months. The exact duration varies, and maintenance treatments can be planned when sweating gradually returns.
Is the treatment painful?
Discomfort is usually brief and mild, and small needles are used. For sensitive areas such as the palms, comfort measures may be discussed during your assessment.
When will I notice a difference?
Many people notice less sweating within a few days, with the fuller effect over about one to two weeks. Results vary from person to person.
Does it stop sweating everywhere on the body?
No. The effect is limited to the treated area only and does not affect overall sweating elsewhere on the body.
